Directionally freeze-cast titanium foam with aligned, elongated pores
نویسندگان
چکیده
Directional freeze-casting – a process used to create foams with elongated, aligned pores applied so far exclusively for ceramics – is demonstrated for titanium foams. An aqueous slurry of <45 lm titanium powders was directionally solidified, resulting in a powder preform consisting of elongated, aligned dendrites of pure ice separated by interdendritic regions with high powder content. After freezedrying to remove the ice dendrites and sintering to densify the powders, the resulting titanium foams exhibited 57–67% aligned pores ( 0.1 mm wide and several millimeters long) replicating the ice dendrites. Because of the high powder oxygen content, the foams display high compressive strength and signs of embrittlement. Lower contamination was achieved by using purer <125 lm powders, but their larger size prevents the formation of pure ice dendrites (and thus elongated pores in the foam), in agreement with a model considering particle pushing and engulfment by a moving ice front. 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Morphological analysis of pores in directionally freeze-cast titanium foams
Synchrotron x-ray tomography was performed on titanium foams with aligned, elongated pores, initially created by sintering directionally freeze-cast preforms using two different powder sizes. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the pore structures were analyzed morphologically using interface shape and interface normal distributions. A smaller powder size leads to more completely sintered tita...
متن کاملTitanium with aligned, elongated pores for orthopedic tissue engineering applications.
Porous titanium with elongated and aligned pores, mimicking the anisotropic structure of bone, was created by solid-state expansion of argon trapped in elongated pores between titanium wires. Both elastic moduli and yield strengths are larger in the longitudinal direction (E = 51 GPa, sigma y = 338 MPa) than in the transverse direction (E = 41 GPa, sigma y = 267 MPa). Finite-element analysis of...

متن کاملReverse freeze casting: a new method for fabricating highly porous titanium scaffolds with aligned large pores.
Highly porous titanium with aligned large pores up to 500 μm in size, which is suitable for scaffold applications, was successfully fabricated using the reverse freeze casting method. In this process we have newly developed, the Ti powders migrated spontaneously along the pre-aligned camphene boundaries at a temperature of 45.5°C and formed a titanium-camphene mixture with an aligned structure;...
متن کاملPorous Titanium by Electro-chemical Dissolution of Steel Space-holders
Among the various methods existing to fabricate porous titanium for structural or biomedical applications, the spaceholder approach is particularly useful as it allows a close control of pore size, shape and fraction. In this method, a blend of pure or alloyed titanium powders and space-holder materials are cold-pressed into a preform which is sintered in vacuum. During the early stage of sinte...
